Ear infections

Ear infections are often external (otitis externa) and caused by viral or bacterial infections that are commonly due to exposure to water from swimming, sweat or excess humidity. They can also be internal (otitis media) where the infection is also in the eustachian tubes, nasal passages or throat. Fluid can build up behind the ear drum and contribute to the pain and discomfort. Oral antibiotics and/or ear drops are commonly used to treat ear infections.

Ear pain is usually caused by inflammation or a fluid build in the ear canal. Earache or ear pain is a common symptom of ear infection, sinus infection, and swimmer’s ear.

What Causes Earache?

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing earache. External ear infections are commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections, typically from exposure to water from swimming, sweat, or excess humidity. An ear infection can also be internal, where the infection is in the eustachian tubes, nasal passages, or throat. Fluid build-up in the ear canal can also contribute to pain and discomfort.
